This year, I’ve been thinking long and hard about my holiday wishes (aside from world peace, and a cure for diabetes, duh.) Unfortunately, now that I live in New York City, my annual desires for a new Jeep Wrangler, a horse, and a Bernese Mountain dog will once again be squashed. Bummer. Instead, I have scoured the interwebs to create a list of gift ideas that are not only awesome as is, but are particularly useful for those of us with diabetes.
So, whether you’re a fashionista, a foodie, fitness nut, or a globetrotter, I’ve included a little bit of everything to help you come up with even more fun things to throw on your holiday wish list (sorry Mom and Dad).
Mochi Purse Organizer – $27
You know that feeling when you get to the airport and you’re all like, “Oh shit. I have nothing I need”? Then this is the gift for you – tons of compartments, it’s squishable, and seemingly overall perfect for the scatterbrained diabetic who’s on the go all of the time.
Pinch Minimergency Kit – $16
So this time you remembered extra infusion sets, but tampons? No dice. These trusty little emergency kits are compact and have just about everything you’d need in them (minus snacks, but that’s a personal problem).
Lavender Sleep Mask – $19
Nothing screws an ol’ diabetic up more than lack of sleep! Whether you’re flying south for the winter, or across the pond, making sure you’re dodging jet lag and sleep deprivation is key to keeping your numbers in check.
Kiehl’s Ultimate Man Body Scrub Soap – $15
I literally do not care that this is for the “ultimate man.” Scrub this bad boy on your feet and back one time and you will be converted for life. It’s like getting a mini back scratch every time you lather up. And it smells all oatmealy and pepperminty and amazing…y.
First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Creme – $28
Dry skin is a biiiiiiiig problem for diabetics. So, I tend to invest in really rad moisturizers to ensure that I’m lubin’ up appropriately. Since wonky holiday blood sugars mess up our body’s healing abilities, I try to stay on top of it with good losh!
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer – $43
Two things torture me in the winter: my pale skin, and when my pale dry skin. Enter: Laura.
Tory Burch FitBit – $195
Already have a FitBit, but want to bling it out? A little vanity never hurt anyone! Also, when I feel cool in my fitness gear, I’m waaaay better about working out.
Not gonna lie, this blingy bugger ended up on my wish list…
FootGloss – $12
Blisters are the worst. If you’re a runner, or if you live in a city and walk all the time, they can totally F up your day…or week. Since taking excellent care of our phalanges is a top priority for diabetics, this stuff is seriously awesome.
Athleta Paint Bucket Relay Capri -$60
Finding yoga or running crops with a thick enough waistband to tuck my pump in them is a CHALLENGE. I’ve tried many-a-brand, but I always come back to good old Athleta. I will say Lululemon crops tend to have more pockets., which is also great. But…yeah, I choose you, Athleta!
Camelbak Glass Eddy Water Bottle – $22
Literally all of my friends have one of these guys and I totally get that we’re like, a weird little cult, but whatever. Haters gonna hate. If this is what you need to get more H20 into your day – just do it.
Paderno Veggie Spiralizer – $34
Trying to lay off the pasta? Me too. This is a nifty little device that makes me feel really cool and powerful…when all I’m doing is turning my zucchini into stringy things! Also, check out an Elon pal’s sister, Ali Maffuci’s, blog. It’s called Inspiralized and she has amazing recipes, and nutrition facts (my Paleo pals swear by it).
Goodbyn Bynto lunchbox – $7 and up
Portion control and bringing lunch from home are my two biggest weaknesses in life. But this fixes that. And, how cute are these guys?
Ok, so my favorite thing in life is snacks (obviously). My second favorite thing in life is DELIVERY snacks. For the diligent health and fitness carb-counter in your life, this is the perfect gift. Since the food is pre-packaged (and auuuuu natural), you can easily keep track of your insulin/carb ratios and cover your grub like.a.boss.
Accessories & Doo Dads
Hanky Pancreas Hoop N’ Bolus – $23
Stick this lil’ guy over your pump and call it a day! These are especially awesome for the kiddos!
Pier 1 Faux Fur Throw – $30 and up
My excuse for this one? “I need to take care of my feet…or something” So duh, why not curl up under a faux fur blankie that is literally the most amazing piece of snuggle material out there. I haven’t climbed out from under mine since….November.
Diabetic Dabs – $10/box of 200 sheets
Is your diabetic a disgusting, bloody, finger-wiper like me? Welllllp, I just bought myself a bazillion of these. They’re awesome and make a great stocking stuffer! They even come in heart shapes! HEART SHAPES! HOW NEAT IS THAT?
Lauren’s Hope Rose Gold Micro Cuff – $40
I am a brat and don’t wear a medical ID bracelet because … well…they’re ugly (sorry). BUT, Lauren’s Hope is an amazing company (Lauren totally gets it) and this bracelet is absolutely fabulous.
Pamela Barksy Pouch – $16
I have, and use, this pouch religiously. It fits extra infusion sets and test strips, and even my meter if I feel like concealing it.
Myabetic Moya Handbag – $60
A fashionable purse FOR YOUR METER. Mind. Blown. I’m personally dying to get my paws on one of these bad boys but haven’t had the chance to yet. The girls behind Myabetic are seriously fierce.
Mark & Graham Monogrammed Pouch – $30 and up
These come in all different shapes, sizes, and styles. And there’s an option to monogram these guys, which is amazing because monogramming is like the socially acceptable way to claim things as your own (instead of licking them, obviously.)
And there you have it! I’ve already told Santa about all of these things, so hopefully he was listening and all his elves are hard at work!
